This dusty city is the reason Sudan was nicknamed as “the dustbin of Africa”. But don’t be discouraged, El Obeid is a good stop if you’re planning to discover the Nuba mountains. It also has a couple of good attractions itself.
Pro-tip: A travel permit is required to visit El Obeid and so is registration with the security police.
Sheikhan Museum
A little museum comprised of two large rooms, that tells the story of Sudan from the Neolithic era to the close of the 19th century, while outside in the garden you’ll find a series of friezes commemorating the Battle of Sheikhan.
Roman Catholic Cathedral
The biggest, and allegedly most beautiful, cathedral in Sudan was built in 1971 and makes for a welcome respite from the heat.
